April comics rebound; more coming

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

The April comic book sales data is being processed right now, and it does appear to be a strong month — certainly the healthiest of the year so far. I want to take a second look at the data before release, however; whenever there's movement in the estimates, it's usually a good idea. Stay tuned...

I'd be curious if you have any thoughts on the Raw Jr./Toon Books STINKY showing up on the chart with 2542 copies, after having already shown up two months ago with 1792 copies, and this for a book which actually came out last summer (and didn't show up on the Diamond charts, then only top 100, at all).

Is it really even possible that a $13 kids book, over six months after publication, had over 4000 orders in the direct market? While nothing else in the same line has anywhere near that many showing up on the chart? The closest seems to be Art Spiegelman's book in the line, which has charted a few times since it came out, but still with only a fraction of those sales, and you'd expect a Spiegelman book to have more direct market interest than the rest of the line.

That does look unusual, although not knowing what promotions were involved, it's difficult for me to theorize. It does have a top 100 ranking within its Amazon subcategory, I saw... but I'd have to look further at it to hazard a better guess.
